Latest Hearing Aid Technology
Besides continued improvement with directional microphones and noise reduction, here are some of the latest improvements to hearing aids.
Extended wear hearing aids
Lyric® is the first and only extended wear hearing device that is 100% invisible. Lyric is comfortably placed in the ear canal by a Lyric trained hearing professional and can be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for months at a time. Unlike many other hearing aids, Lyric is positioned completely inside the ear canal, so it uses your ear’s natural anatomy to provide exceptional sound quality.
Open Fit Hearing Aid:
With an open fit hearing aid, the canal is barely covered by a small thin dome that lets in sound naturally while amplifying only the sounds you have difficulty hearing, mainly in the high frequency range. The plugged up sensation is now gone with open fit devices. Due to their small size, open fit hearing aids are cosmetically appealing. The remote microphone is a new hearing instrument option in which a microphone is neatly tucked into the upper folds of the ear, while the hearing instrument itself fits completely in the ear canal. This new hearing instrument design allows larger venting providing a more open fit without having to wear the instrument behind the ear.
Wireless Connectivity
Bluetooth can be used to allow a wearer’s hearing aids to communicate with audio devices such as telephones and television. Bluetooth hearing aids often come with an additional ” streaming” device to allow wireless communication between the device and the hearing aids. Some hearing aids now utilize a different wireless technology that eliminate the need for an additional streaming device and allow direct wireless connectivity once a small transmitting device is plugged into the television set.
High Frequency Transposition
Studies suggest that with some hearing loss, the inner ear may lack the hair cells to make loud high frequency sounds meaningful, even if they could be amplified. These new hearing aids capture high frequency sounds, and instead of making them louder, shift them down into the lower frequency regions where many people’s hearing loss is not as severe.
